Learning Log 7

Finally! No more staying back for Romeo and Juliet. Anyway, after the Romeo and Juliet I get to learn quite a lot of stuff and I even get to know more about my friends. Firstly, we are able to learn time management and communication skills through this activity as we are given a specific time to complete our practices and preparation for the play and we have to learn how to communicate well with our group members thus to reduce conflicts etc. In addition, we even learnt how to manage our money well! As there was a budget given hence we have to think carefully before making decision to buy any stuff.

After the performance, I thought through and I realised that I was quite up to standard since my director was happy with all our  acting. However I think there still much spaces for improvements such as expressing more feelings into my lines and I realised that I somehow rushed through my lines. If I was given another chance, I will definitely make some changes in that as I feel that it's not romantic to rush the lines as it tend to come out as a rap. As for my group, I think they did well and I can see their efforts after the performance especially Jia Yi as he managed to get hold of the fierce and rebellious Tybalt's feel. Furthermore, Jasmine did great in playing the piano and it came out very nice with the dance. In addition, I believe that we can do much better by preparing our props and I think that if more time is given we could have better props. This means that we have to manage our time more wisely.

Lastly, I will strongly recommend the play to the juniors next year as it is able to bond them as a class and they will be able to learn qualities that are useful to them and they can use it in the future. Furthermore, this may increase the interest in literature in some of the juniors next year.

Comments:
It would be better if we get to watch our class performances (:

Learning Log 6

After reading the notes and the lesson in class on literary devices, I learnt that literary devices are use to convey meaning to readers. Firstly, we started learning about basic literary devices that are use to convey imagery and figurative languages. After knowing the literary devices, we were taught to identify the literary devices in a prose and poem and the reason for the author/persona to use that particular literary device. Next, we learnt about sound devices and why are they use. e.g. rhythm is for an entire word while rhyme is only for the last sound. Lastly, we continued with advanced literary devices with are for diction and sentences structures. I learnt that they are used to convey a deeper meaning in the character or something about the text and we are able to identify and hightlight the diction and sentence structures used in the text. In addition, I believe that the class understand the lesson as I feel that the lesson is well-explained.

Learning Log 5

I have learnt more about unseen poem and prose passage and the ways to approach them. Firstly, an unseen poem or prose passage is one that you may not have came across before or you have not had the chance to work through it in detail. Secondly, you have to approach an unseen poem by reading it at least twice for a better understanding and to work out difficult phrases and words. In addition, you should write down your thoughts and reaction on the paper as it will help u to unlock the meaning of the poem as the feelings and emotions on reading a poem is important. Next, we should not assume that the poet is speaking directly to you as they could choose to use a persona and I have learnt that a "persona" is an imagined identity and by using a persona, the poet is able to present the point of view of something or someone. Then, I also learnt how to approach an unseen prose passage by reading it to get an idea of the text and taking note of the difficult words and phrases and getting a better understanding of the text bu knowing who the characters are and their relationship without forgetting about the mood and the setting. I also learnt that there are two techniques to organise my answer: the IBC method and the PEEL method.

IBC : Introduction , Body, Conclusion
PEEL: Point ( To tell what do you want to say ), Explain/Elaborate ( To explain why did you want to say that ), Evidence/Example ( To show prove that made you say that ), Link ( Connection )

I also had a brief idea through the examples given on using the method to get a answer.

Lastly, I also learnt how to quote and there is the ABC method.
ABC - Attention, Brief and Context.

Suggestions:
I believe that it will be helpful if there is a lesson to explain it further.

The lesson was interesting as everyone had their Macbeth performance. I can see everyone's effort through their acting, costumes, makeup and props. I think the Macbeth performance is an important lesson as it is our first performance and through this experience I believe that we will perform better during the Romeo and Juliet performance. This lesson let us know what are the weaknesses we have so we will improve on it. In addition, when everyone was changing into their costumes I can see their sense of urgency and this shows how sincere they are.  Lastly, I believe that everyone deserve a high mark as they did their best. For example, those people who have slightly softer voice, expressed how determined they are to get a high mark by increasing the volume.

To sum it all up, the lesson was memorable and enjoyable and the class did well for the performance.

Learning Log 3

The lesson about predictions was great. I was suppose to contribute the story but unfortunately I went to Thailand hence the remaining group members decided to combine their ideas all together into one which I think that it is a very clever thing to do since it is a last minute work if I am not wrong. As I was away and I did not contribute anything so I was the one who came out reading the passage they wrote. There were many interesting stories but there is one story that I think it is pretty true which is the one about having a cut behind the ear if you point the Moon as once my friend pointed the Moon and when he removed spectacles to clean, he suddenly had a cut behind his ear. To be frank, I believe in superstitions and predictions kind of stuff as my mother is a Thai and she often tell me not to do this not to that and I have a lot of relative in Thailand that are doing jobs related to religious so I think I am probably influenced by that which often gives me goosebumps. After all I really enjoyed the lesson.

Comments:
The lessons taught so far are interesting and I really enjoyed them.

Learning Log 2

The superstitious lesson was great, everyone was asked to write down five superstitious down... I learnt many superstitious after the group discussion from the common ones to the rare ones but there are some superstitious are very creepy. Example the one shared by my group about the result of killing or hurting animals by pregnant women. In addition to our sharing, Mrs Woo told the class about the incident happened to her friend which may cause people having goosebumps. I was wondering is there a treatment for that kind of situation, the doctor probably thinks that the fault is at the genes of the parents. So I decided to go check out on the "monkey-human" topic and finally it leads me to something called "anencephaly". But probably no one really know that superstitious or the "anencephaly" is the cause of the incident but to be frank I believe in superstitious.

Next, we have another assignment which is to draw three witches of the Macbeth story on the blank paper given. So, I went home searched the net and decided to draw them out even though I knew that my drawing was not very good. In the class, Mrs Woo chose some classmates to act out the scene of the three witches and it came out with a sense of humour maybe it is because it is their first time. In a nutshell, the lessons are enjoyable.

Learning Log 1

I learnt that cinquain is make up of five lines and each line of the cinquain have to follow a rule. The rule for line one is to have a word for the title of the cinquain. The rule for line two is to describe the title with two words. While the rule for line three is to have three action words ending with "-ing". Next the fourth line, four words describing the feeling is needed. Lastly, write the title with only one word as a reflection.

Basically I learnt that cinquain is a poem of five lines and in order to make it interesting we have to add in many interesting details.

Comment about the lesson:

The lesson was interesting and there was a group work that allowed us to come out with something creative out of four brains and it also gave us a better understanding of cinquain. Not only that, the group work get the group member together and know each other better.

Suggestions for improvement:

More examples.
